NPR Loves PorcFest!

Submitted by Sovereign Curtis on June 29th 2011

PorcFest 2011 has already been featured in TWO news releases (a podcast/article and a radio spot/article) by NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO! The kicker? FAIR (and even FAVORABLE) COVERAGE!

Early in the week PorcFest was visited by Robert from Planet Money on NPR. He was interested most in the economic aspect of PorcFest, specifically the voluntary trade, lack of government regulation, trading value for value (and shunning FRNs), etc.

Listen here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/06/28/137478762/the-tuesday-podcast-...

Shout out to George Mandrik Skouros as Robert goes straight for George's bacon!

Be sure to give this one a full listen, you're going to be pleasantly surprised!

Later in the week (hilariously coinciding with Buzz's Bigger Gay Dance Party) Josh Rogers from NHPR arrives to cover Gary Johnson's short visit. His arrival preceeded the presidential candidate's, and I noticed him (he was quite out of place) walking around the periphery of the aforementioned party. An unvarnished conversation/interview ensued, and much to his credit he chose the one comedic line and skipped the rest.

Listen here: http://www.npr.org/2011/06/26/137429473/porcfest-voters-ponder-which-can...

Here is the comedic quote making the rounds (you can mail me at curtis@porcfest.com):

I'm a big fan of Ron Paul. I tell people he's my favorite government thug. But he's still a government thug, you know.

But I'm quite fond of this one as well. Props to Gary Johnson for standing tall (though I think it'd be hilarious if attending PF became a politcal career ender):

ROGERS: That view was common at this burning man of libertarianism, where some wore pistols and knocked back cocktails, and others practiced yoga and traded silver as currency. But could embracing such a counter-cultural crowd be good politics for a would-be president? Gary Johnson seemed to think so.

Mr. GARY JOHNSON: Those things don't bother me at all.

ROGERS: Johnson acted like another face in the crowd though he was happy to talk to anyone who approached. The Republican knows he's a long shot. But he says if New Hampshire was right for the Free State Project it might just be right for him.

Mr. JOHNSON: And I just thought, wow, this is really terrific. And that it came here, man, it just speaks volumes, you know, to New Hampshire.

Now tell me, when did you ever dream that the Porcupine Freedom Festival would get such great coverage from National Public Radio?

Support Our Sponsors!

Submitted by EthanLeeVita on June 17th 2011

PorcFest runs up a few expenses in bringing you an increasingly-awesome festival. It also provides an ample venue for various libertarian anarchist organizations to advertise their existence to various libertarian anarchist individuals. Thus, a basis for sponsorships is established. This year, with the head organizer unable to cover the pre-porcfest shortfalls (always reimbursed after porcfest) himself, donations and sponsorships have increased importance. These organizations have bought PorcFest sponsorships in varying sizes and are to be thanked for their support. Please consider visiting their websites, see how you could potentially get involved, buy their products in Agora Valley (where some are vending), and thanking them.

Silver Circle Movie

Our only platinum ($2k) sponsor, Silver Circle Movie's goal is to spread ideas of liberty and sound money, particularly silver alternative currency, to those less educated and interested in such subjects via a movie, to be released next year, and an online comic. Silver Circle will be vending shirts (End the Fed & Rebel), 1ozt silver circles, 0.1ozt rounds, and silver changemaking with no surcharge for small transactions. They'll be at Agora Valley site #19, with Shire Silver to one direction and Shaman Scents to the other.

DelValley Silver

A gold sponsor, DelValley Silver is a barter network, based in silver, with an emphasis on building strong, local economies. They offer discounted rounds to members and post a merchant list of members. They'll be at Agora Valley site #24, so consider signing up or buying some rounds there!

Agorist Alchemist

Another gold sponsor, the Agorist Alchemist will be exchanging your federal reserve notes to AOCS-approved copper rounds and vice versa, as well as having a raffle with a prize of a 1ozt silver round. All proceeds are going to the FSP. He'll be at Agora Valley site #38, with Individual Sovereign University to one direction and Freedom's Phoenix to the other.

Free Keene

Another gold sponsor, Free Keene is a community blog by various individual voluntaryists from Keene, NH. They've covered various news from 4:20 celebrations to judges illegally prohibiting cameras in courtrooms, as well as various other local events from a voluntaryist perspective. You can find various bloggers and keeniacs throughout PorcFest.

Alec and Kate Muller

Alec and Kate Muller are our only individual sponsors (gold), but its just one more sign of their devotion to family-friendly activities as their sponsorship sponsors those activities. They'll also be hosting their annual icecream social fundraiser during PorcFest.

Libertopia

One of our two silver sponsors, Libertopia is an annual 3-day festival of peace, freedom, music, community, and ideas. It includes renowned speakers, workshops, panels, parties, banquets, music, film, art, literature, commerce, exhibitors, themed camps, performers, social networking and more!

Freedom's Phoenix

Our other silver sponsor, Freedom's Phoenix is a media center, including a website and radio show, based in Phoenix, AZ and covering a wide range of topics related to libertarianism. They will be offering their new dime cards, amongst many other objects, at Agora Valley site #35, with Larken Rose to one direction and George's Famous Baklava to the other.

Center For a Stateless Society (C4SS)

Our sole Porcupine sponsor, the Center For a Stateless Society is a project of the Molinari Institute and dedicated to building public awareness of, and support for, market anarchism. They provide news commentary, related analysis, and original research from the unique market anarchist perspective, serving as a market anarchist media center.

Spotlight: Josh Noone from the Federal Crime

Submitted by jjschless on June 4th 2011

In this installment of Spotlight I have a Q & A with Josh Noone of the Federal Crime.  Check it out!

1. You have been involved with Free Staters in New Hampshire for a while now. I've seen you at Porcfest, Live Free or Die and Free Keene Fest. What are your impressions of the growth and changes you have seen within the liberty movement and specifically the activists in New Hampshire?

When I first heard about the FSP it was a real surprise to discover a lot of people with similar viewpoints on liberty. Each year the FSP and the greater community of people interested in liberty gets larger and more tighter knit. I’ve seen people come in and just go right to work for a cause they beleive in. The FSP has started something amazing. I’d love to see liberty in my liftime.

2. Can you recall any outstanding or noteworthy experiences from previous Porcfests?

I’ve only been to one Porcfest. This will be my second. Last year I witnessed the signing of the Shire Scociety Declaration. Jordan Page played a fantastic set, as well as other bands that I see at liberty oriented events like The Blue Eyed Fools. I have to say one thing that struck me was just how nice everyone was, I witnessed no drama at porcfest. Not to mention some great speeches and awesome home cooking.

3. What advice do you have for other bands and musicians that may be thinking of moving to NH with the Free State Project?

Ask yourself, do you believe in liberty? Personal resposability? Being a peaceful person? If so NH sounds like a good destination. Bands may have better luck focusing on areas like Keene, or Portsmouth. NH in general has a lot to offer.

4. Have any of your songs been inspired by run-ins with local authorities or bureaucrats?

Not directly. I don't usually have a lot of run-ins. Not inspirational ones anyway. A lot of the songs I write focus on the human experience through the eyes of someone just wanting to live life, experience love and have compassion and understanding for those around them as a free individual in a world that doesn't seem to respect individuality or freedom for that matter. Was that run-on sentence? Anyway thats why we are goign to porcfest right? To express ourselfs freely, to share our experiences, to eat good food, listen to good music and get inspired to live the kind of life we want to. Im getting psyched.

How to Dress Like a Rebel: Bring Your Best Cosplay to PorcFest

Submitted by tommy.mozingo on June 2nd 2011

The following blog was written by Megan Duffield, from Silver Circle Movie, about their special sneak preview of their movie at PorcFest 2011.  The blog can be found in it's entirety here.

"A day in the life of a Rebel can bring many surprises, but the good surprises take some hard work, hence these tough duds. So take notes from the fashionable freedom-fighters and prepare yourself for a revolution. And like the page suggests, the best accessory is having plenty of physical silver in your pocket OR in a nice, safe safe.

If you are attending PorcFest in Lancaster, NH THIS MONTH (geesh, time flies), join the cosplay and “Dress Like a Rebel” to win some fun prizes from Silver Circle. Visit us on Thursday night in the TV Room of Roger’s Campground from 4-7pm for never-before-seen footage, free refreshments, raffles, kick-ass cosplay, and a special guest!"

Arrested for dancing at the Jefferson Memorial? It would be funny if it wasn’t true.

Submitted by tommy.mozingo on June 1st 2011

"On Saturday, in defiance of an unconstitutional ban on dancing at public monuments, a silent flash mob erupted at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC. The move was to protest the decision by US District Judge John D. Bates to ban dancing at Washington’s monuments, stating that it wasn’t how Jefferson should be memorialized. In response to the flash mob, Park Police arrested the dance troupe, led by political activist Adam Kokesh, host of the syndicated radio-show “Adam vs. The Man” and Iraq War vet, for “demonstrating without a permit”, and were held for five hours before being released. While this was bad enough, a viral video was released showing some of the protestors being violently thrown to the ground by the Park Rangers, in what can only be described as an obvious display of police brutality.

Dancing, even if you are the worst dancer known to man, is a free act of expression, which last I checked is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. Banning it as a “demonstration” is bad enough, but the Gestapo-like reactions of the Park Rangers was uncalled for. Thankfully, the Park Rangers’ Office of Personal Responsibility is opening an investigation into whether or not the police were too aggressive in their handling of the situation."

Above excerpt was taken from Silver Circle Underground's blog that was posted on June 1st, 2011, the blog can be found here.

At the Porcupine Freedom Festival 2011, Adam Kokesh will be taken part in the roasting of Stefan Molyneux, of Free Domain Radio fame.  In addition to this, he will be delivering a speech, and hopefully recording a live version of his TV show, Adam vs. The Man.

Break The Ice With Freedom Lovers! Learn to Dance Latin Club Style Salsa!

Submitted by Sovereign Curtis on June 1st 2011

Salsa is fun, sexy and romantic. The irresistible rhythm energizes you. It's a great way to lure your significant other to PorcFest. Hands down the best way to meet women. And a fantastic way to meet confident men who can show you a good time!

Your salsa instructor, Danimation, has spent the last 12 years dancing at Chicago Latin night clubs. He's competed at the worldwide level with his dance group, winning 4th place at the Salsa Rueda Congress of the Americas in Miami. He met his lovely wife, Veronica, who grew up in Latin America, at a salsa club of course. And both will be sharing their slick moves with anyone who wants to have fun.

The class is free, but donations will be accepted toward Liberation Animation's effort to educate the public on principles of liberty.

All are welcome. Don't miss it! Saturday, June 25, 3pm to 4pm in Jazz Hall

State Free Wedding Ceremonies Available!

Submitted by Sovereign Curtis on May 31st 2011

PorcFest 2011 will be offering state free wedding ceremonies of any type your heart may desire!

Of course, there will be the standard wedding for people in love that want to get married and have a celebration - state free. Having your wedding ceremony at PorcFest is the perfect way to do that!

For those that are already married that would like to renew their dedication to that commitment, there is also a vow renewal ceremony available. This provides a special opportunity for individuals to symbolize the fact that love brought you together, not the state.

You can also arrange for any unions and to be married for any duration. You can be married for the day, for PorcFest, or as long as you want. These can be just for fun or if you wish to represent a temporary arrangement. Some ceremonies are even used to mock the system. It's whatever you want it to be!

Any state free wedding can consist of any consenting individuals, regardless of sex, number of those within the marriage, or any other government "restrictions". There's even a certificate included! You can bring the supplies for your own personal touch or take advantage of the full service variety that can be provided by the ceremony crew for your convienence. Cake, champagne, favors, anything you may need!

Stacy Litz will be officiating the ceremonies and is the founder of Liberty Weddings. She was certified as a non-denominational wedding officiant through the Universal Life Church in 2006.   She can prepare a unique ceremony tailored to your specific relationship's story, a theme, or anything you like! Just ask! Don't hesitate to reply with any questions or check the link below for some general information on Stacy's Liberty Weddings business.

Note: Not all information on website applies to state free weddings at PorcFest .

For PorcFest's Eyes Only! Silver Circle!

Submitted by Sovereign Curtis on May 31st 2011

Our Rebels in Silver Circle are fierce, non-conformists, with vibrant personalities. Creating them for the film and comic book required inspiration from some of the top liberty activists and liberty enthusiasts. What better place to find these rebel-souls than at the Porcupine Freedom Festival AKA PorcFest?

Because of the Free State Project and help from many other community members PorcFest has become a successful event and also a breeding ground for our fans. This summer we will be celebrating their activism and loyalty to our project by sharing some top-secret footage that no one outside of the studio has seen. By the time PorcFest rolls around we will have full-length versions of the film, but important components like “extras” and facial movement still won’t be 100%. So no feature film for you all BUT, we will be perfecting a scene for PorcFest’ers. We want you all to get a taste of what to expect at the end of this summer. Your opinion means a lot to us.

So what is in store for attendees?

When: June 23rd from 4-7pm

Where: TV Room at Roger’s Campground

Admission: FREE

Food, prizes, and beverages included!

Come celebrate the last leg of production with Silver Circle and get a sneak peek into the filmmaking process as well as some free silver and t-shirt raffles.

There will also be an optional event to do CosPlay for the event. We’ll have some special PorcFest guests dressing up and joining the screening. This week you can find out how to “Dress Like a Rebel” in our comic book. Anyone who rocks Rebel attire at our event will receive a FREE prize for us and can ALSO still enter into the raffle for free silver and t-shirts.  So get funky and rebellious and head to our event Thursday night in between the two best radio shows, Declare Your Independence and Free Talk Live in the TV Room.

It’ll be a great way to kick off the awesome weekend ahead of us. To RSVP please visit the PorcFest event page

Introducing the Bands and Music Acts of Porcfest: A Minor Revolution, Geoff Useless

Submitted by jjschless on May 28th 2011

A Minor Revolution has played at the Porcupine Freedom Festival before and it is a pleasure having them back!  Geoff Useless is new to the festival and having played with A Minor Revolution before the two bands ought to put on a good show.  They share a time slot at 10:30pm on Thursday the 23rd in the Free Keene Pavilion.  What order or arrangment is left up to the bands to decide.

http://www.reverbnation.com/aminorrevolution

Historians maintain that the earliest documented origin of A Minor Revolution can be traced back to one fateful night, when Pat Flood (guitar/vox) and Zack Sprague (drums) first shared a few beers and a few laughs at the University of New Hampshire in 2007. It was rock-love at first sight. Sharing a passion for everything from punk rock to folk music, Pat and Zack began playing and writing some tunes. However, they knew pieces were missing, so when Ryan Lovlien (guitar/vox) joined the band in 2008, a huge void was filled. And there was much rejoicing.

The trifecta (being influenced by similar artists--NOFX, Alkaline Trio, Mischief Brew--to name a few), started writing their own music. When Kieth Patterson became the band's bassist in late '08, AMR began playing shows in the NH seacoast area.

The band's first year was very successful. AMR's musical style progressed as they gained experience, tightening up while maintaining a raw punk sound.
When Patterson and and AMR split ways in early 2010, a more fitting replacement could not have been found: the addition of AJ Valcourt provided a serious presence to an already rockin' rhythm section. Within the last year, the punk-rockin' foursome have broadened their horizons, playing shows with some great bands throughout NH, in Maine, and in the Boston area, with plans of expanding further.

At the end of the day, A Minor Revolution is about two things: liberty and rockin' balls, as can be seen through their fast-paced sound and their "Don't-Tread-On-Me" lyrics. They are from NH after all. So if you'd like to have your socks rocked off, come out to a show sometime. Live free or die, bitches.

https://www.facebook.com/GeoffUselessmusic

Geoff Useless has seen a lot since starting out as bass player for punk legends’ The Queers. He’s played with the Nobodys and started the highly acclaimed punk band The Guts. Now the local Portsmouth, New Hampshire punk prodigy is teaming up with the areas most talented musicians and writing tunes that’d make Brian Wilson jealous. Pop Punk HAS NEVER been this good.
