SAFETY TIP: TICKS
Keep an eye out for blood-sucking parasites! No, not politicians... we mean ticks.
We are in a wooded area and there have been a few cases of Lyme contracted at past PorcFests.
To protect yourself:
• Avoid walking through tall grass and wooded areas
• Wear long pants and sleeves.
• Spray insect repellant over your clothes and exposed skin.
• Check your entire body for ticks. Check your children and pets.
• If you find a tick, remove it immediately by grasping it close to the head and pulling slowly with
tweezers, or visit Fr33 Aid for help with tick removal. Removing a tick within 36 hours of when it
attaches reduces the risk of disease transmission.
Size Reference:
The ones to worry about regarding Lyme disease are the nymphal stage blacklegged ticks.
Not all ticks carry Lyme disease. Deer ticks which can carry Lyme Disease
are no larger than the head of a pin or a poppy seed. All ticks can be difficult
to spot. Keep an eye out for the hallmark “bullseye” shaped rash (a red ring
around the bite site spreading outward over days) or any flu-like symptoms,
even if you aren’t aware of having been bitten.”
