Life is Good; AA at Porc Fest
—————–
When: Thu, 9:00A _(60m)
Organizer: Mark Hansen, Organizer: Mark Hansen, Mark has been sober for over 6 years. He realized that alcohol was becoming a problem in his life, and didn’t want to be remembered as being an alcoholic. He didn’t want his children to remember him that way, and he didn’t want to die from it. As a former park ranger and current security officer at a hospital, he has seen his fair share of what alcohol addiction can do to a person. He has witnessed people going through detox. He has seen the physical and psychological effects of it, and he has seen people die from alcoholism and drug overdose. He didn’t want that inanimate object (alcohol) to win over his life, so he decided to be a warrior and a soldier to defeat it. Be a warrior. Life is Good!
For Whom:
For Whom: For anybody who is sober or trying to stay sober during the week, and for anybody who might be having a difficult time with substances and trying to stop. Is alcohol or other substances becoming overwhelming, consuming, or taking over your life? Habits can become addictions for some people, and when it becomes a problem, it may be time to stop. When your body gets used to having foreign substances in it every day (such as alcohol), it may be physiologically very difficult to stop or change the habit/addiction. I’ve found it more helpful to talk with others who have actually gone through it, than to talk with counselors who haven’t. —Mark

Description: A morning group for those who will not be drinking and/or participating in extracurricular substances who would like to have a coffee, chat, or support and encourage each other to stay sober. {More}

Free Health Care!
—————–
When: Thu, 10:00A _(60m)
Speaker: Jason Edson {Website}, Jason spent nearly two decades in emergency medicine, starting as a volunteer firefighter, becoming a paramedic, and eventually supervising ambulance services in three states. In that time, he worked towards creating regulatory reforms for ambulance providers, strove to improve patient care, and received several awards for extraordinary efforts in the saving of a human life. As a Captain on his local Fire Department Jason ran the training department for a decade.

Since transitioning to his current role, Jason has spent the past few years travelling the country talking about Healthcare, how human beings are capable of amazing things, and other eclectic topics. He spends most of him time talking about how improving access to healthcare is the most important thing we can do for reform right now, how a one size fits all approach to healthcare reform won’t work, and what policy reforms we can make today to help people take control of their own healthcare. Having worked in both urban and rural environments, Jason’s background and experiences have given him a unique insight on the healthcare system and what we can do to fix it.

Jason is still a paramedic, volunteering on his hometown ambulance while living in Western Massachusetts with his wife and three boys. In addition to his speaking and paramedic work, he brews his own craft beer, is a member of the local county agricultural society, and is a youth hockey coach.

For Whom: If you suspect there’s a better way to provide health care than simply increasing government control; if your friends always dismiss you because of course only government can provide safe affordable health care.
. . . If you refuse to believe in the false choice of government takeover vs status quo, this talk is for you.
Description: The health care industry is regularly held up as a failure of the free market and an argument for a government takeover, but the truth is just the opposite!
. . . It’s the clear failure of government intervention preventing a market from serving customers better. Almost every problem we experience in the health care industry is due to government; and the only real solution is removing government from health care.
. . . We’ll look over some of the problems attributed to market failure in health care, demonstrate how these are actually caused by government, and explain how a free market would untangle these bureaucratic and crony messes naturally and spontaneously.

For Whom: If you question whether markets work, or why they do work, this is an excellent overview of the market function and why libertarians rely on it rather than on government violence.
Description: Is there really any reason to believe that markets will ALWAYS offer better services than government, I mean ALWAYS??? Surely that is just a religious belief! There must be at least SOME circumstances in which governments are a better tool for the job!,
. . . In this presentation we will explore the incentive structures built into the fabric of the universe which make the market an imperfect system which is constantly self-correcting and contrast that with the incentives that lead government to unfixable errors.
. . . For those who love reason and the elegance of economics, this illuminating presentation is a MUST!

Michael Barnes’s debut film traces Roger Ailes’s 50-year career from campaign strategist to cable news mogul to fallen icone. Accepting the award, director Michael Barnes said, One of the keys to understanding Roger Ailes is that he was a middle-America guy who was a relentless champion of the underdog. Roger made it possible for underdogs to win. He excelled in leading long-shot campaigns against formidable foes, often in one-sided contests…. You have to measure the good with the bad, the failures with the successes. And it puts meaning and context to the incredible life and Shakespearean downfall of an icon.
